I have noticed that faith necessarily involves certain tensions. We live with paradoxes between grace and works, between the visible and the invisible worlds, etc.

I think that some people live on the simple side. They do not recognize paradox. Their faith is authentic, yet profoundly simple.

I think others recognize the tension. They cannot find peace until they can reconcile the tension as a paradox.

The individuals in the most trouble are those trapped in the “fuzzy middle,” who neither accept the simplicity nor the paradox. They are either ignorant of the tension or unable to resolve it. This leads to a dangerous spiritual/psychological conundrum.
