As a leader you must beware of being trapped in a false dichotomy. Your team will tell you that “it is either this or that”, and then ask you to choose. Sometimes this choice is unduly restrictive. A leader needs to see through such limitations.
Sometimes the leader is justified in saying “It is not either/or, it is both/and.” On the other hand, the leader must be careful about putting absolutely unrealistic demands on his team. Every good leader must face trade-offs, but a trade-off is not the same as a false dichotomy – know the difference.
