The attempt at achieving humility is often characterized by the use of “humility-devices.”  Sometimes one employs self-deprecating humor, sometimes one displays a moment of vulnerability, sometimes one compares one’s skills with another, etc.  The problem is this: humility is not a single action it is an internal state which produces a series of actions. The irony is this, proud men are especially effective at employing devices than approximating humility. Never confuse a humble action with a humble man.
